Reindeer Week...

What another great and busy week in 1st Grade!  The students researched reindeer all week!  We read books, we went to the Computer Lab and looked at a Blend Space about reindeer, and made reindeer recipe for Christmas Eve night!  Can't wait for you to see the books they made!  This will be a reading grade because students used the text given to them and charts around the room for spelling and writing sentences!  I gave them reindeer photos to put in books!  They chose what to use!  this was an "in class" project grade.

Hour of code was the "nation's talk" this week. Students learned about what coding means and worked in partners to create a code and act out being robots and performing the codes!  Lots of fun!

Lastly,  you are so blessed...we remembered students in Greenville Hospital and made cards to send to them along with a book from our Guidance Teacher, Mrs. Robertson.  This was her idea and a great one for a project! Be thankful for these wonderful kids of yours!! :)

Thanks for all you do to support our learning!  You are greatly appreciated!

December has arrived in full swing...

We have had another busy week in 1st Grade as we are swinging into the holidays!  We found a great fireplace with Christmas music on UTube so we sit in front of the fireplace and work like we are at home!  We finally reached 200 so we made a "Thank Heaven" poster with a sample of some of our angels above.  One highlight was Mrs.Shah's birthday this week as we prepare to say goodbye.  It has been a complete pleasure to have her intern with me.  She finishes up this Friday and we wish her all the best.  We have been working with 10s and leftovers in math so we spent a lot of time sorting objects into groups of tens and playing 10s and 1s games!  Ask your child what they learned!

Coming up...We encourage reading nightly and a form about Holiday Reading is coming home for those 2 weeks of vacation in December.  Students who complete some holiday reading will get a free ticket to 6 Flags in the Spring...  You are seeing more coming home regarding reading and responding to text for homework.  Sit down nightly and ensure your child comprehends and can read what is required.

If you haven't received any emails from the class, please email me at annette.hyder@spartanburg2.k12.sc.us
so I can get you on our mailing list!! :)

Thanks for volunteering to send items for our "special December days" .

Thanksgiving is Close...

Another great week in 1st Grade families!   We so enjoyed having lunch with our families and what a schoolwide turnout we had!  We finished our Book Drive and between all of 1st Grade, we collected over 500 books to give to our 4K Classes and Special Needs Pre-School Class.  We also shared with students who go to Morning Computer Lab as a gift for their hard work!

Opinion/ Persuasive Writing was fun and students tried to decide if they wanted to play at my house or if I should come to their house...and why!   We will continue this writing into December as we prepare to write about why we would make a good elf for Santa!

Lastly...

Happy Thanksgiving from the turkeys!  ;)

What a great week in 1st Grade.  We have been talking about Persuasive Writing and we are working on our "Book Drive" posters to convince other grades to join us in our efforts!

We love to see our dads!  They were all so EAGER to have their pictures taken! ( HA!)   I think dads take a "back seat" to moms at times but this should never occur.  Their presence is an important one in shaping and molding the lives of their children!

Being an "Air Force" Brat myself...Veteran's Day is extrememly important.  May we never forget the blessings we have in this country.  So proud of my dad and brothers for their service and I know many of you understand that too.  Many important veterans in your lives.  The kids greeted our veterans and families and everyone beamed!  Some of the comments made by the kids to the passers were..."Thank you for your service,"  "Thank you for serving our country and the world," "Welcome and please come back"!  They sounded like a commercial.  We just told them to greet them and say "Welcome".   I think they really understood and were in "awe" of the men and women in uniform...  Great Day!

Next week, we will present our posters to 2nd grade and encourage them to join our Book Drive.  We will graph our book efforts and we will enjoy Thanksgiving Lunch with many of our parents. Get those lunch forms in!  Closing in on Thanksgiving!  Get your PTA Book orders in and thank you so much for everyone who has responded!  Encourage good listening and behavior as we head into the holiday season!

The children did a fabulous job on their Community Helpers Presentations!  This was an "in class" project.   They needed to listen, learn, and practice using good writing!  Very proud of the effort and our  Community Helper visitors were wonderful!   This week we began Thanksgiving activities.  We are writing everyday about something we are thankful for.  We also researched ways to catch a turkey and wrote using "Beginning, Middle and End" to go along with our fiction story elements we are learning about!

We will continue learning about the sun and the moon next week with a test on Friday.  Above, the students are learning about rotating and revolving. We discussed how AMAZING the Solar System is!  It is so ordered!

Next week, work on reading, reading, reading!  We will be sending Cold Texts home for reading and finding answers ( text evidencne) in the reading paragraph.   They need practice with this!  Please assist them!  There will be a test on Cold Text with questions and reading words only...

Get books in for our Book Drive!   We need gently used...not new!
You are loved and greatly appreciated!

Also, Veteran's Day on Tuesday at 9:00 with a special breakfast with all dad's at 7:00 AM in lunchroom!

Have a great weekend...

The children did a fantastic job of staying on task in spite of all the Fall and Harvest fun!   We learned the "Doubles Rap" and that chant helps us with adding numbers greater than 10!  We learned a strategy for addition by using our number lines.  We started at the BIG addend and counted up!

Today we estimated seeds in our pumpkins and we measured circumference.  We made words from the words " Pumpkin and Patch"  and our winners were Rilee Grace, Logan, and Lindsey!  Super work girls! We also completed a candy tally graph thanks to all our parents!

Our Mystery Reader today was Mrs. Crowe and she read Spookly The Pumpkin  and There Was An Old Lady Who Swallowed A Bat.   She ordered a pumpkin cookie cake and we went out dancing!

Looking forward to Community Helper Presentations tomorrow and we will move on to Thanksgiving  and Opinion Writing next week. Don't forget our Doubles Test on Wednesday and ask your children about our fun "Would You Rather Graphs" for November.

No School Tuesday so don't come...We won't be here!
Have a great weekend and be safe Friday evening...

Get your money orders for coupon booklets in and also get your Art Work orders and form for Veteran's Day!

We had such a wonderful week in 1st Grade.   Our engineering project was one of our successes.  Students rewatched a video about how the Empire State Building was built and it's features.  Then, we constructed our final buildings.  I emailed pictures of all groups home! If you didn't get the pictures, email me so I can add you to our list.  Students listed materials and wrote about how they constructed their buildings.

The "Dog Walker"  was my second Book Talk Group! We learned the Silent E Rule of "Elvis in the House".  :)  Ask your child if they are in this group what we did!

I want to encourage you to make sure you going over reading and word cards at home.   Spelling gets a little more difficult.  Students on grade level for 100 Book should now be on "B" or higher.  Keep working hard!

We can't wait to see our moms for our Pumpkin Day on Thursday and don't forget to dress for Community Helper Day on Friday.  We have worked hard on our Question /Answer books and we look forward to presentations.

Welcome to October!

What a great start to October!  The kids listened to informational text books about several community helpers.  They wrote questions all week so we were prepared for our panel of random Oakland Parents who shared their jobs and experiences.  Walk to School Day was a blast!  The kids dressed and brought lego creations.   Thanks so much for joining us parents!  The Field  Trip was fabulous too!  I emailed pictures to parents who have emailed to be added to our Parent 2014 Group.  Please email me at school if you are NOT on that list!  :)

We are now ready to research and find answers about our community helper of choice.  Students will go to the Computer lab next week and observe several Blendspaces about their community helper and take notes for their books!  We will also work with our building materials as we become Structural Engineers!  Have a great weekend!

We had such a fun day by making "place value" skeletons.  We talked about our bodies and how under our skin is muscles and our bones.  Our bones give our body structure so we don't flop around like jello!  :)  We counted our q tips we used and wrote the number and how many tens and ones were in our number!

We closed the day with Count the Monkeys and Jennifer Bruce.  They loved her participation books!  She also worked with our small group Book Talk this morning.  Our BB/R readers were reading the book Hurricanes.

We can't wait for Community Helpers visitors and Field Trip next week!

What an extra fun week we have had bringing in Fall.  We read both fiction and informational text books about apples and Johnny Appleseed. The students did some great writing about what they learned about John Chapman.
In science, we experimented with apples in the open air versus apples in lemon juice and water. We talked about how chemicals ( oxygen in the air)  reacts with the apple  and causes browning.  We talked about the difference betweeen mixtures and chemical reactions and made Apple Volcanoes!  They loved it!

Eating all the delicious foods was a favorite and I appreciate your help in making our learning fun!

Next week we move on to questioning and how good readers ask questions throughout their reading and we will write some questions in our new "Teacher Talk" notebooks.  We will also begin a Unit on Community Helpers and the students will take their first steps in becoming structural engineers!

Thanks you again for all of the support!  Look over test folders and return those on Monday!

Happy Fall Ya'll!

What's Happening September 15-19?!

Thanks so much for attending PTA Open House.  It was great talking with all of you and hope you enjoyed the slide show of your children! Above the children are busy in math centers!  We used playdough to create "teen numbers".  Number Bingo, Computers, Ipads and Legos were fun as well!Learning can be fun!

We have been busy MAP Testing and checking students off for DRA Reading levels.  Baggies with lots of books and word cards went home with students who are practicing extra hard on reading.

A group of hard working readers accompanied me to the library to choose some "theme baskets" of their interest for close reading at home!  Many of these students are reading at or above grade level and have been working very hard over the past few weeks! Others are working toward reading from these extra fun baskets by making progress here and at home in reading!  Extra 10 minute snack time recess will given 2 times a week for students on all yellow!  LISTENING is the key!  The kids are doing wonderfully!  We want to reward them!  :)

We are anxious to begin our "Teacher Talk" notebooks that were purchased through a writing grant with Donors Choose.  Individuals and corporations read your request and decide if it is "worthy" of their funds! We were fortunate to have some great support and purchase new mailboxes for Writing Center!

Next week brings Fall, Apples, and Fun!  Work hard and Play Hard!
Have a great week!

'
What a busy week in 1st Grade!  We have all of our supplies
in for the Animal Shelter!  Thank you so much for your support and thank you Snyder Family for agreeing to help with our delivery.
We loved having breakfast with grandparents!  We have been reading narratives about children and grandparents.  This was easy writing for us because they love grandparents so much and do some great things with them like cooking and fishing!

Our Wonderopolis study on squirrels was very interesting!  We found out that squirrels eat nuts because they like the hard outside of the nut.  It feels good on their teeth.  Their favorite nut is peanuts!  Who would have thought that?  They do store nuts for winter months when there is no food.  Thanks for the contribution Colten!   Thanks for supporting our curiosity.
